The Chelmsford Medical Education & Research Trust champions local medical education and research. We fund professional development and training grants (up to three years) for junior doctors and dentists, driving medical excellence and innovation at Broomfield Hospital.

Who Can Apply

Applications are invited from Consultants and Resident Doctors in training whose projects strongly reflect the mission and values of CMERT.

Grant Duration

Successful applications may be funded for up to three years, supporting projects that advance innovation and excellence in medical education.

Application Process

Applications are meticulously reviewed by the Executive Committee three times annually, with submission deadlines in February, May, and September.

Grants Awarded

Dr Jay Stanley received a CMERT award to set up a computer club for doctors at Broomfield.

Dr Yasmin Kamal and Mr Quentin Frew have been awarded a CMERT research award. The ReHEAL study will evaluate histological and biomechanical changes in burn scars following fractional Co2 laser therapy.

Investigation into the factors that contribute to the loosening of total hip replacements.

Study to determine the value of H. pylori serology in reducing the endoscopic workload.

CMERT Awards for Doctors in Training

CMERT Awards recognize excellence in research and presentations among doctors and dentists in training. Prizes range between £50 and £500, and winners showcase their work at an awards ceremony, inspiring key skills and gaining valuable career insights.

Early Mission

To provide high-quality educational, audit, and research facilities for doctors practicing within the Chelmsford area, recognizing the vital contribution of primary care to hospital services.

Key Developments

In 1994, CMERT assumed a central role in promoting postgraduate medical education and establishing a strong local medical education community. Key milestones include the opening of the Peter Martin Medical Academic Unit, a dedicated space for learning and development.

Infrastructure Support

Demonstrating our commitment, the Trust has invested in essential infrastructure and equipment, including the Peter Martin Medical Academic Unit and the Blockade Surgical Training Unit.
